Topic of the week
Of interest this week has been the Sony-BMG DRM (Digital Rights Management)
fiasco, where users who purchased certain CDs (a list
of at
least some of the relevant titles has been collected by
the EFF) found that some nasty software had been installed on
their computers, simply by playing the CD!
-
The person behind the discovery work is Mark Russinovich.
Russinovich does
some really leading work; you can read more about his analysis
of Sony's software at his Blog.
-
The uninstall process is incredibly complex and intrusive. While
some online articles hints at a simple uninstall process, this is not
the case. Users must register, download additional software,
justify their uninstall decision, and wait for email confirmation
before they can uninstall the software.
-
The software runs on Windows; to avoid having the software
installed,
disable "autorun" on your CD player. And obviously, don't
install the software manually.
-
There are claims that, "security experts claim that the technology
can easily be exploited by worms, ...etc" This appears to have already
happened.
-
And lastly, the whole affair seems headed for court, with
investigations beginning in at least one country,
and class actions in another.
And some other stuff...
